(24.03.09) Honesty in communication is an ethical concern of fundamental importance and honesty is also ranked as one of the most important and most highly valued attributes of another person. The current research, however, suggests that perception of honesty of a particular statement is relative and depends e.g. on one’s position in the situation or on framing of the statement. Having both basic and applied goals, my project focuses on perceptions of dishonesty in interpersonal communication, advertising, and medical journals. The greater part of the studies employs an experimental approach characteristic of psychological studies within the field of social cognition, with quantitative as well as qualitative data analyses. The results of the project might potentially contribute to refining professional codes of ethics, so that information provided to consumers, physicians, and patients would create an objective and unbiased picture of reality.
